Born in Sutton-in-Craven near Skipton, David Binns attended Skipton Art School, then Leeds College of Art, gaining his NDD.in illustration.

After teaching, David spent 13 years as a free-lance artist living near Lindisfarne Nature Reserve, Northumberland where wintering wildfowl and waders on the Fenham Flats and summer nesting birds of the Farne islands became subjects for his work.

David moved back to Yorkshire in 1990 and to the wildlife of the Pennine hills and valleys. David had a picture accepted at the first S.WL.A. exhibition in 1964, and became a member of the Society in 1968. Exhibits most years with the S.WL.A at the Mall Galleries (winning the R.S.P.B. Fine Art Award four times.) and the annual National Exhibition of Wildlife Art (N.E.WA) at Liverpool.

A Pattern Of Eiders

Commercial work includes book illustration; jigsaws designs for Waddingtons, RSPB.,R.S.N.C.; card designs for Medici, R.SP.B. and animal charities; designs for plates for Country Artists Ltd. and reproductions have been published by W.W.T Soloman and Whitehead and Northumberland County Council.

In 1987 he was included in ‘Wildlife in Art’ at the Leigh Yawky Woodson Art Museum, which toured the U.S.A for 2 years.

Bradford University bestowed the honour of Doctor of Letters on David in 2000.
