Perch
Wax Oil Pastel
(SWLA Exh. '04)

Growing up close to the Leeds and Liverpool
canal was the start of his fascination with fish. From a boy catching his first
stickleback using an empty crisp packet his passion has developed over the
years, alongside his love of drawing. It was during his Masters degree at the
RCA that he really began to explore and express this attraction. Carl
experimented with different materials including watercolours on film, with award
winning success, but admits there’s nothing better than having a wax oil crayon
in hand and applying pastel to paper with his fingers to get his creative juices
flowing...

'Drawing fish from life has encouraged me to completely re-evaluate how I now
capture them. . .you could say I’m taking a fresh look at fish.’ |
