Membership

There are two types of membership: Artist Member and Friend of the SWLA

Artist Membership of the SWLA is by election. There are three categories of Artist Membership:-

Members (SWLA): pay an annual an annual fee (currently £190) and can enter up to 6 works free of charge to the annual exhibition. Members enjoy a range of other benefits including; commission on sales reduced from 45% + VAT to 35% +VAT, free entry to all exhibitions at the Mall Galleries, free reproduction of work on SWLA publicity (invitations, catalogues etc.), the opportunity to undertake commissioned work from the FBA Commissions Bureau and a free page on www.swla.co.uk.

Associate members (ASWLA): Associate membership is offered at Council's discretion where it is felt that this would be beneficial to the individual artist or to the Society. Associate members pay an annual fee (currently £64) and can submit three works free of charge and a further three at the non-members rate. Commission on all sales is the reduced rate of 35% + VAT. Associates have no voting rights at the AGM but enjoy many other benefits available to members. Associate membership is offered for three years. At least two works must be submitted in each of these three years. An Associate can be elected to full membership under the existing election procedure at any time within the three years or at the end of that period. If not so elected, then an Associate member may be granted a further three year Associate-ship, or will revert to non-membership.

Honorary members (SWLA): such membership honours the finest artists who have contributed significantly to the Society and it's exhibitions over many years. There is no annual membership fee. Honorary members may submit two works free of charge at the annual exhibition and a further four at the non-members rate. Honorary members retain all the other benefits of the Society including SWLA following their name. Members move into Honorary membership at the Council's discretion.

Council may also from time to time invite a distinguished artist with no direct or current association with the Society to become a member.

All works, from all categories of membership, are subject to the scrutiny of the SWLA Council sitting as the selection committee who have the responsibility of rejecting any work thought not appropriate or acceptable. Work exhibited previously in a London gallery is not admissible. Forms for submission of work to the annual exhibition are automatically sent out to all categories of membership.

Applicants to Membership

To become a member of the SWLA artists must submit work to the annual exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London. Six pieces should be submitted at a fee of £10.00 each. Application forms for non-members wishing to submit work to the annual exhibition are available from the Exhibitions Secretary at the FBA, 17 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1 5BD. Telephone: 0207 930 6844

Artists considering submitting work to the annual exhibition please go to submissions

The SWLA Council sits as the selection committee to view and discuss all work. Artists whose work is judged to be of particular merit and who have a high number of works accepted in one year, or who have had all or most of their work accepted in previous years have their names put forward to the AGM as Candidates for Associate or full membership.

All members will be notified of the Candidates prior to the annual exhibition and will therefore have the opportunity to view each Candidate’s work before the AGM. The category of membership will be awarded only by a majority vote at the AGM.
