After
many years of illustrating bird books – mainly field guides, monographs, and the
seven volume Birds of Africa series – Martin is now concentrating on
making pictures that aim to be more atmospheric, looser and more painterly than
scientific illustration allows. North Norfolk`s wildlife, sea, and big skies are
an inspiration, and recent overseas visits to New Zealand, Norway and Kazakhstan
have contributed many ideas. A month in Costa Rica in early 2006 should produce
even more exotic experiences, and will no doubt call for an augmented palette.
